Top GRE Preparation Tips

Thousands of students take the GRE every year. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) assesses verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing skills. The computer-delivered test takes about 3 hours and 45 minutes.

The GRE is divided into three main areas: Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA), Quantitative Reasoning, and Verbal Reasoning. VDIEC brings you five GRE preparation tips:

  1. Prepare well in advance

Start preparing for the GRE early. If you are in the final semesters of graduation, you may not have practised verbal or quantitative subjects for some time. It can take several weeks to build a regular study habit, so begin early enough to avoid preparing for the GRE and semester examinations at the same time.

  2. A dictionary is not your gospel

You will need a strong vocabulary to score well in the verbal section. When learning GRE words, understand their context instead of memorising only their definitions. Verbal questions use words in varied sentences, so learn each word's meaning, synonyms, and common usage.

  3. Strengthen your foundation

Before attempting difficult problems, make sure your fundamentals are clear. Review the mathematical calculations and formulas you studied at school because you will need to apply them throughout the quantitative section.

  4. Practise, practise, practise

Regular practice and realistic mock tests are essential. Complete practice tests under the same time limits and break conditions as the real examination. Avoid pausing unnecessarily; becoming comfortable with the complete format will help you manage your energy and time on test day.

  5. Make your study time productive

Consistent, focused practice improves both speed and accuracy. Give enough time to analytical writing, quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning, and vocabulary. The GRE is not about shortcuts—it rewards developed skills and the ability to apply them under test conditions.
